Goran Sechkov – After the fire, hope remains

Among us live people who prefer not to be in the spotlight, yet their actions are so significant and inspiring that their stories deserve to be told. One of them is Goran Sechkov, a third-year student majoring in “International Business” at IBS. Although he avoids the limelight, his volunteer efforts stand as a testament to courage, humanity, and dedication, filling our hearts with pride that he is one of our students.

On November 9, 2024, Goran was among the first volunteers to respond to the devastating fire in the village of Eleshnitsa. Without hesitation, he worked side by side with firefighters and residents, proving that heroes don’t wear capes—they act when they are needed most. Thanks to his dedication, Goran rightfully received gratitude from the municipality of Eleshnitsa and the appreciation of the entire village. “Goodness is a strength everyone needs to live fully,” said the mayor of Eleshnitsa, Mrs. Kristalina Ivanova, in a congratulatory address to the rector of IBS. These words perfectly reflect Goran’s actions. Through his efforts, he breathes life into these words and reminds us that change begins with small but significant gestures.

But this is just part of his story. Goran is a volunteer and an active member of the “Rescue Club for the Future,” part of Lazar Radkov’s “Caps for the Future” cause, which not only raises funds for medical equipment but also actively helps those affected by fires and natural disasters. This summer, Goran was on the front line fighting fires as part of the ICDSoft Fire Brigade in Hisarya, Nevestino, Rila, Tsarvaritsa, Iliya, Dyakovo, and many other places he probably cannot name himself. These efforts are invaluable and unforgettable to the people whose lives and homes were saved.

In addition to fighting fiery disasters, Goran actively participates in search and rescue operations and recently qualified as a rescuer for earthquake and flood response. This is a new step in his relentless pursuit of helping those in need, no matter the challenges.

One of the causes Goran is directly involved in right now is assisting Aunt Stefka and Uncle Svilen from Eleshnitsa, Elin Pelin. Their house was completely destroyed in the fire, along with all their documents and savings. Goran and other volunteers have started rebuilding a small shelter so they can spend the winter in warmth. Generous people have already donated a wood stove with a cooking option, clothes, and other essentials to help them in this difficult time. As of today, Aunt Stefka has a bank account to collect funds for clearing the burnt house and building a new home. The idea is to place a mobile home on the site of the old one—a dream that can become a reality with the support of all kind-hearted people. The family also has domestic animals that are difficult to feed, as the fire destroyed everything, including their food. Any assistance—financial or material—will be of great importance.

We urge everyone to support Goran’s efforts because “After the fire, hope remains.” Together, we can prove that kindness is contagious and that we hold the power to make the world a better place.

While Goran prefers his actions to speak louder than words, we feel compelled to share these stories. The world needs more examples like his. Kindness has the power to inspire when we recognize and appreciate it. And Goran’s kindness is not only in fighting fires—it is in his humility, determination, and dedication to the greater cause.

Goran, thank you for illuminating the path of kindness with your actions—even if you prefer to stay in the shadows. We are proud of you!
