Associate Professor Dessislava Alexova, PhD, participated in the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Global Influences and Priorities in Tourism Development” with a presentation titled “THE MINING INDUSTRY AS A DRIVER FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF BOZHURISHTE.” The presentation showcased results from surveys and field studies, alongside a comparison with findings from ongoing research and the forthcoming local referendum. Organized by the “Tourism” Section within the “Administration and Management” Department of New Bulgarian University, the conference gathered lecturers, researchers, and tourism experts from Bulgaria and abroad.

Dr. Alexova’s presentation sparked a lively discussion due to the topic’s relevance and significant public interest surrounding the referendum on whether to support or oppose the development of the mining industry in the municipality. Conference participants made suggestions for the sustainable development of tourism in the region and proposed best practices that could be integrated into the municipal sectoral policy.

The conference drew the attention of senior representatives of the tourism sector, including Ms. Irena Georgieva, Vice Minister of Tourism, and Mr. Anton Penev, Director of the Municipal Enterprise “Tourism” in Sofia. Also in attendance were members of the Sofia Municipal Council and representatives of the tourism business community. The aim of the conference was to discuss modern trends in tourism development and how global influences shape the strategic priorities of the industry. The event provided a platform for exchanging ideas and analyzing the challenges faced by the tourism sector on national, regional, European, and global levels.

The discussions focused on key aspects of tourism development, including management and innovation, education and employment, investments and sustainable development, diversification, and communications. The conference was structured into several discussion panels, where participants presented their research and practices on the highlighted thematic priorities.

Following intensive discussions and presentations across various thematic panels, the conference emphasized the need for an interdisciplinary approach to addressing tourism challenges. Participants unanimously agreed that the successful development of the industry requires close collaboration between academia, the public sector, and private enterprises. Strategic issues were discussed, highlighting the necessity for innovation in education and workforce training, as well as sustainable investments in tourism infrastructure.

The conference at New Bulgarian University provided students, doctoral candidates, and young professionals in the field of tourism with a valuable opportunity to gain experience and participate in the global dialogue on contemporary industry development issues.
